Figure Painting with Steven Assael

Workshop | This program is completed

Steven Assael’s work can best be described as bold, cutting edge paintings rendered in a strong traditionalist manner. We are pleased that Steven will be sharing his methods for creating his highly acclaimed work with a select group of students during a five-day figure painting course at the Palette & Chisel. Not afraid to explore life on the social fringes, Steven's paintings have been admired for their subject matter, visual strength and technical acumen.

Students will work from the model. The course will feature lectures, demonstrations and individual critiques. We will be concerned with issues of structure in regard to form, color with regard to value, and the development of color relationships. We’ll review how tones and color relate to planes and anatomy of the figure. Steven will give a short talk or demo daily on some aspect of what we are dealing with in a particular pose, position in space, lighting or any other particular painting or drawing challenges.

Steven will also reveal his particular strategy for dealing with analytical and emotive approaches as he conceives a painting involving the human form. Steven's highly collected works enjoy positive critical reaction. His work appears in major exhibitions and gallery shows. We are confident you will gain insight from his dramatic approach to painting the human figure.

Steven Assael

www.stevenassael.com Steven Assael is recognized nationally as one of the leading representational figurative artists of his generation. His portrayal of the human image is empathic, ennobling, and psychologically penetrating. Assael's figure compositions synthesize the characteristics of the past masters with a selective eye for the present, suffusing elements of naturalism and romanticism to blend contemporary techniques with those of the past. Born and raised in New York, NY, Assael showed an enthusiasm for art at a young age, taking art classes at the Museum of Modern Art at the age of four. He attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and currently teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York and at The New York Academy of Art. Assael's work is included in public and private collections around the world including the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yale University and the Chicago Institute of Fine Arts. His work was exhibited in a ten-year retrospective at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle and CBS Sunday Morning ran a feature on the artist and the show. Assael is represented by Forum Gallery and currently resides in New York City.
