Class #276: Oil & Acrylic - Still Life: Glazing & Scumbling Techniques with Helen Oh

This course explores the characteristics of opaque and transparent oil colors. Since the Renaissance, artists managed the wide-ranging qualities of oil paint to reproduce optical reality . This includes the use of glazes and scumbles, two different approaches that render convincing form and jewel-like colors. Working from the instructor's setups, students investigate the methods of depicting solid forms as a prelude to a wider range of techniques.

Helen Oh is a visual artist. She studied painting at the School of Visual Arts, the National Academy of Design, and The Art Students League in New York. Helen teaches studio art courses at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and annual workshops at the New York Academy of Art.
Helen is a recipient of two Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grants, and a Julius Hallgarten Painting Prize from the National Academy Museum. She has exhibited at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, the Terra Museum of American Art, and the Butler Institute of American Arts. Collections include Columbia University and The Americas Society in NYC. Helen regularly contributes articles to the Tutorials section of the Artists Magazine.
