Course Description

This 5-day workshop will be a comprehensive study into painting the portrait in oils. Casey will demonstrate his process each morning discussing key elements that are the building blocks of a successful painted portrait. Casey’s demos will include his approach to an alla prima portrait as well as a studio portrait. Casey will cover the fundamentals of painting for all skill levels, from those with a little experience to advanced, to help achieve a solid effect of light and form in paint. He will discuss what makes great portraiture and how he strives to capture the soul of an individual as well as their likeness. Casey will cover all aspects of oil painting from drawing, value, edges and form, as well as a more clear understanding of color. After the morning demo, students will paint from the model and Casey will give individual instruction with each student as they work from the model. He will give advice on an individual level to help each student with their current painting as well as how they can achieve the next desired level in their work. This workshop is open to all artists with some painting experience interested in improving their ability in traditional oil painting.

Artists, ranging from beginning to advanced, will have the opportunity to work from a live model, and will receive one-on-one instruction gaining a fuller knowledge of traditional portraiture.

    Childs, Casey

Casey Childs is an American born artist currently based in Utah. He is a full-time painter and Wyoming native who first studied art formally at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming. Casey loved drawing from an early age, and it seemed to come easier to him than other interests so he knew one day he would pursue a career in an art-related field, but didn’t take it very seriously. It was during his first “real” art classes taught by John Giarrizzo that he knew he wanted to become a painter. He continued his art education at Brigham Young University, receiving a BA in Painting, followed by study with renowned portraitist and figurative artist William Whitaker. After many years of study, Casey has created a highly skillful body of figurative and portrait work which has been featured in galleries across the U.S. He has received numerous awards including many from the Portrait Society of America for their International Portrait Competition—First Place Drawing in 2015 for his drawing, “Natalie;” Second Place in 2018 for his oil painting, “Sliver;” Second Place in 2016 for his oil portrait, “Phylis VanderNaald;” and Third Place in 2017 for his oil painting, “Take These Broken Wings.”

Casey has also been honored with the prestigious Gold Medal from the Oil Painters of America’s 27th National Juried Exhibition, as well as the MEAM museum Purchase Award and Springville Museum of Art Exhibition Award in the 13th International Art Renewal Center Salon Competition. Casey’s work has been featured in many publications including American Art Collector Magazine, International Artist Magazine, and Southwest Art Magazine.

Casey is known for his portraits and figurative work, and more recently his religious paintings. No matter what the subject, Casey strives to “capture the soul of the individual—not just their likeness.” When he is not doing all things art, Casey can be found enjoying a round on the golf course or spending time with his wife, Amanda, and their three teenage boys.
