Class #101: Fundamentals of Visual Art 1 with Don Yang

This class is designed for anyone, from beginning level to advanced level, who wishes to systematically learn to draw and paint in their visual art making. Class will focus on the four most important fundamental elements of visual art; Drawing (form principles), Perspective (spatial relation), Design (composition), and Color (color harmony)*
Class will include lecture, demo, in-class projects, homework, and critique.
The class will also cover the techniques of various dry and wet media such as graphite, pen & ink, transparent wash, etc.
The eventual goal of the is class is, by equipping the students with the essential tools of visual art fundamentals, to prepare them to be able to pursue their individual art of visual communication and expression in their own style, medium, and genre.
* Fundamentals of Visual Art 1 will introduce the students up to the study of Limited-Color principles and exercise. Principles and practice of full colors will be covered in the subsequent Fundamentals of Visual Art 2 course in the following month.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Don Yang came to the United States in his late teens. After 7 years of service in the U.S. Army, he pursued his childhood dream of living as an artist by studying at the American Academy of Art in Chicago where he earned a BFA with honors and later an MFA with emphasis on fine art and traditional illustration.
After graduating from the Academy, Don has taught figure drawing, oil painting, and artistic anatomy at the American Academy of Art for 22 years and served as chairperson of Fine Arts Department and Foundations Department.? An avid plein air painter, painting both outdoors and in his studio at the historic Fine Arts Building in downtown Chicago, he frequently exhibits his work both locally and nationally.
