Class #101: Fundamentals of Visual Art with Don Yang

This class is designed for anyone, including complete beginners, who would like to learn how to draw and paint in a systematic way, beginning with the most important and fundamental principles of visual art; how to Draw (light and form principles), how to create a convincing sense of space (Perspective), how to create an aesthetically meaningful composition (Design), and finally how to paint a painting that expresses harmonious color relation (*Color).
*Fundamentals of Visual Art 101 focuses on Drawing, Perspective, Design, and monochromatic painting.? The subsequent class of Fundamentals of Visual Art 102 covers Color theory, principles, and exercises.
Learning Objectives: through instruction and exercises students will
1. Understand and implement the elements of Form under the light in order to create a convincing sense of realism in form.
2. Understand and be able to utilize Perspective to create spatial illusion.
3. Understand and employ Design principles in visual art making.
4. Develop competent skills in working with various media (pencil, pen & ink, monochromatic wash).
Instructional methods:
Class is comprised of instructor lecture, demonstration, and students working independently with the guidance of the instructor. There will be both individual critique and class group critique of finished projects.
Class projects and exercises are done both from life and photo references.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Don Yang came to the United States in his late teens. After 7 years of service in the U.S. Army, he pursued his childhood dream of living as an artist by studying at the American Academy of Art in Chicago where he earned a BFA with honors and later an MFA with emphasis on fine art and traditional illustration.
After graduating from the Academy, Don has taught figure drawing, oil painting, and artistic anatomy at the American Academy of Art for 22 years and served as chairperson of Fine Arts Department and Foundations Department.? An avid plein air painter, painting both outdoors and in his studio at the historic Fine Arts Building in downtown Chicago, he frequently exhibits his work both locally and nationally.
