Learn how to effectively implement the Orton-Gillingham (OG) Approach in your classroom. This course provides a thorough understanding of English language structure and sequential teaching, essential for multisensory, structured literacy, and fulfills the coursework for the Orton-Gillingham Academy Classroom Educator Level.


NUMBER OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 30 hours (3 CEUs)

  • Prerequisite: None
  • Course Dates: September 21st (Virtual), October 12th (In-Person), January 4th (In-Person), February 15th (In-Person), March 15th (Virtual)
  • Course Times:
Virtual Days: 12:00 to 3:30 pm (9/21 & 3/15)

In-Person Days: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm (1 hour lunch break) (10/12, 1/4, & 2/15)

The training curriculum for the OGCE level leads to a basic understanding of the following elements of Orton-Gillingham (OG) instruction:

  1. Reading acquisition in all learners and the nature and needs of the dyslexic learner

  • Phonological and Phonemic Awareness

  • Phonics

  • Reading Fluency

  • Vocabulary

  • Reading Comprehension

  1. The Orton-Gillingham Approach

  • Awareness of the OGA seminal works

  • Brain Research in relation to reading

  • Understanding the difference between an Approach and a scripted program

  • Knowledge of the principles of the instruction and the ability to explain why the principles of the Orton-Gillingham Approach are effective

  1. Knowledge and Structure of the English Language

  2. Development of the Orton-Gillingham Lesson Plan for Groups or Classroom


Course expectations:

  • Attend all class meetings in person and virtual for the entire duration of the course
  • Complete homework assignments between classes
  • Read assigned required readings and reading reflections
  • Take a brief final exam

  • Physical materials will be delivered directly to your school. You won't need them for the first session, as digital versions will be available in Google Classroom. Full details regarding delivery timelines will be shared shortly.
Farrant, Jennie
Jennie Farrant

Jennie comes from a family of educators and knew she wanted to be a teacher from an early age. After teaching first grade for two years, Jennie realized she had a heart for the students who needed extra support and went back to school to become certified in special education. Jennie later received her Master of Education in Reading Instruction and Reading Endorsement. However, it was not until her training with the Orton-Gillingham Academy in 2016 that she felt equipped to support the struggling reader. Since then, Jennie has been on a mission to grow as an OG practitioner and train teachers and tutors in the OG approach. Jennie helped start an OGA-accredited instructional program for dyslexic students in Orlando, Florida. She is a Fellow with the Orton Gillingham Academy (OGA), certified Multisensory Math Practitioner through Key Learning Center, and teacher trainer for ReadSource.
