Georgia O’Keeffe painted more than large flowers. Whatever subject she painted she had a distinctive technique and composition. After you learn this composition and technique you will have the opportunity to produce paintings
in this style without copying her work. O’Keeffe’s style works with a variety of mediums. Choose a medium from
the supply list below. Please bring your materials to the first session. Expect to produce one or two works of art each session.

  • Allen has produced art and taught studio art and art history for most of his life.  He was fortunate to come from generations of artists.  His undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate education was in studio art and art history.  Allen has taught high school to graduate-level classes.  He has been recognized by various organizations for his teaching and artwork.  He has been active  in local and national art organizations, including representing D.C. art educators at the national level for a decade. 



  • Acrylic or Oil Colors
    Paints: Black, white, red, yellow, and blue pigments that work together

    OR:
    Titanium White – Blue [Phthalocyanine Blue or Phthalo Blue or
    Winsor Blue] - Red [Quinacridone Red or Naphthol Red or
    Pyrrol Red] - Yellow [Arylide Yellow or Hansa Yellow] – Ivory
    Black

    Painting supports: canvas board, stretched canvas, gessoed Masonite, and/or

    gessoed birch plywood

    Size: O’Keeffe’s style works best with 18" x 24" or larger painting

    supports

    Brushes: Small, medium and large round pointed brushes and filbert
    brushes. Use small brushes for small paintings, large brushes for
    large paintings

    Supplies: Liquid soap, soft paper towels, plastic sheet to cover your table,
    palette such as white foam plates, wide mouth plastic container
    [such as a Cool Whip container], sketch book

    Supplies for oil paints: kneaded eraser, charcoal pencil, odorless mineral

    spirits and a second container with a screw top lid
    Supplies for acrylic paints: vinyl eraser and a #2 pencil
    Watercolor Paints
    Watercolors: A set of watercolors [pan or tube] OR

    Chinese White – Blue [Phthalocyanine Blue or Phthalo Blue or
    Winsor Blue] - Red [Quinacridone Red or Naphthol Red or
    Pyrrol Red] - Yellow [Arylide Yellow or Hansa Yellow] – Ivory
    Black

    Supplies: water container, 140lb or heavier watercolor paper, #2
    pencil, vinyl eraser, soft paper towels, plastic sheet to
    cover your table and a spray water bottle

    Brushes: small round watercolor brush, medium round watercolor

    brush, medium filbert

    Ink and Watercolor
    Watercolors: See “Watercolor” for needed paints
    Paper: 140lb or heavier cold press watercolor paper
    Supplies: Thin line and very thin line black waterproof pens, water
    container,, HB pencil, vinyl eraser, soft paper towels,
    plastic sheet to cover your table, plastic sheet to cover the
    floor

    Brushes: small round watercolor brush, medium round watercolor

    brush, medium filbert

    Pastel
    Sticks: 12 or larger piece soft pastel set
    Eraser : Kneaded eraser
    Paper: Acid-free pastel paper or 300 to 600 grit sandpaper, or fine

    or extra fine sandpaper

    Supplies: soft paper towels, Q-tips, foam brush
    Optional: plastic gloves, set of stumps.
    Colored Pencils
    Pencil: Set of colored pencils
    Supplies: Drawing pad or paper, vinyl eraser, colorless [pencil]blender, pencil sharpener
