In Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created one of the best-known literary characters in the English language. We will explore topics ranging from the life of Doyle to the portrayal of Holmes in plays, films, radio, and television. For example, Holmes was the personification of logic, but Doyle was frequently duped by charlatans. In Doyle's writings, Holmes never said "Elementary, my dear Watson" nor sported his characteristic hat, pipe, and cape. We will also read and discuss the Holmes story. This is a series and Dr. Bill provides a review if you missed the previous class.
