History of the Candy Bar

Joseph Fry in Great Britain created the first chocolate bar in 1847. But the American love affair with the candy bar started when WWI U.S. troops returned home from Europe, where they had received envious amounts of chocolate with their rations. Various "fillers" were added to chocolate bars, and by the end of the 1920s, small regional manufacturers across the U.S. were making over 40,000 different candy bars.  Many manufacturers consolidated or folded during the Depression, with only three main ones left today.
