The Invention and Big Business of Chanel No.5
Social Science/History | Available (Membership Required)
This talk is all about the world's most famous scent. First, we will explore fashion designer Coco Chanel's early life, career, and the aquaintances that motivated and enabled her to invent Chanel No. 5. What was Coco seeking in this new perfume? Then, we will examine how she publicly introduced the perfume and expanded its sales before losing business control over the fragrance. How did Coco fail to regain ownership of her creation for the next 20 years, and yet ultimately profit enough from it to become one of the world's richest women? Finally, we will see how the perfume's closely guarded recipe combines numerous natural and synthetic ingredients. What is the future of the fragrance in light of the diminished availability of its very specific floral components?
