Ride the rails with historian David Doiron, as he shares his knowledge of Arizona's railway system using historical photographs, artifacts, and maps.  Participants will be able to handle and examine relics of railroading, including a piece of rail from the Gold Spike ceremony at Promontory.

David Doiron

Doiron, David - My earliest memory happened when I was 4 years old. We were living near Melbourne Australia and my mother took me with her to see a movie. The way to get to town was by train and I stood on the platform gripping my mother’s hand as a steam giant breathed by us! It was awesome and that was the only thing I remember from that day.  My maternal Grandfather found out about my interest in railroads and he took me to see all sorts of railroad operations. Logging railroads, an interlocking tower, a roundhouse, and the streamlined Sunset Limited. But the most vivid impressions he left with me were the stories he told and his genuine affection for the 35 years he worked on the Southern Pacific. We moved to Tempe in 1959 and my interest in railroads combined with my interest in the Valley, and they have stayed with me all my life.  I have been a grocery bag boy, a bus boy, actor, musician, sports car racer, an auto mechanic, an Air Force pilot, an Airline captain, and a grandfather.
