The Arts | Registration opens 8/10/2026 12:00 AM MST (Arizona)

Twisted trees are unique and you can produce striking works of art. Some of these trees will stand alone and some will be in a southwest background. Each painting will have its own color scheme. There will be instruction and, if you wish it, specific help. You may use acrylics, watercolor, ink and watercolor, gouache, pastel and/or colored pencils.  If you have a question about the supplies, please email me at areamerart@mindspring.com

  • Acrylic or Oil Colors

    Paints: Black, white, red, yellow, purple and blue pigments that work together OR:

    Titanium White – Blue [Phthalocyanine Blue or Phthalo Blue or Winsor Blue] - Red [Alizarine Crimson, Quinacridone Red or Naphthol Red or Pyrrole Red] - Yellow [Lemon Yellow, Zinc Yellow, Arylide Yellow or Hansa Yellow] – Ivory Black 

    Painting supports: canvas board, stretched canvas, or primed Masonite 

    Size: your choice 

    Brushes: Use bristle brushes for oil paints.

    Use polyester brushes for acrylic paints.

    If you only use one brush shape, use a round pointed brush

    Next, you may wish to buy a filbert shaped brush

      Unless you have a large painting [36” or larger], a medium and small brush works. .

    Supplies: Liquid soap, soft paper towels, plastic sheet to cover your table, palette such as white foam plates, two wide mouth plastic containers such as a Cool Whip container], optional sketch book

    Supplies for oil paints: kneaded eraser, charcoal pencil, odorless mineral spirits, an additional with a screw top lid

    Supplies for acrylic paints: vinyl eraser or kneaded eraser, #2 pencil  


    Watercolor or Gouache

    Watercolors: A set of watercolors in a pan OR tubes of

    Chinese White (zinc white) – Blue [Phthalocyanine Blue or Phthalo Blue or Winsor Blue] - Red [Quinacridone Red or Alizarin Crimson or Pyrrole Red] - Yellow [Lemon Yellow, Zinc Yellow or Arylide Yellow or Hansa Yellow] – Ivory Black 

    Paper 140lb or heavier watercolor paper

    Supplies: two water containers, #2 pencil, kneaded eraser, vinyl eraser, soft paper towels, plastic sheet to cover your table, round yellow sponge, natural sponge, Mr. Clean eraser [found in cleaning supplies in a grocery store or Walmart]

    Brushes: small round pointed watercolor brush, medium round pointed watercolor brush, optional medium or large filbert watercolor brush, optional mop brush


    Ink and Watercolor 

    Everything listed in the Watercolor materials and supplies plus a thin line or very thin line black permanent waterproof pen 


    Pastel 

    Sticks: The largest set of soft pastels you wish to buy.

    Eraser : Kneaded eraser

    Paper: 18”x24” or larger acid-free pastel paper or 300 to 600 grit sandpaper or fine or extra fine sandpaper

    Supplies: Soft paper towels, foam brush found in stores that sell house paint, optional odorless mineral spirits, optional rubber gloves


    Colored Pencils

    Pencils Set of colored pencil – such as Prismacolor brand

    Paper cardstock and/or mixed media paper– your choice of size

    Blending tool or solvent

    : Derwent Burnisher Pencil OR

    Stump OR

    Caran d’Ache Full Blender Pencil OR

    Baby oil and cotton ball OR

    Orderless mineral spirits and cotton ball




Allen Reamer

Allen Reamer, Allen - Has produced art and taught studio art and art history for most of his life.  He was fortunate to come from generations of artists.  His undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate education was in studio art and art history.  Allen has taught high school to graduate-level classes.  He has been recognized by various organizations for his teaching and artwork.  He has been active  in local and national art organizations, including representing D.C. art educators at the national level for a decade. He teaches over 175 studio art classes and over 230 art history classes.
